Øivind Alexander Slaatto (b. 1978)
Danish designer, founder of the SLAATTO DESIGN design studio in Copenhagen, Denmark.
Øivind always tries to find simple, obvious yet poetic solutions – often with inspiration in the world of nature. In his work he's rather searching for the obvious rather than the spectacular - always aiming for the clearest possible solution. Among his clients are Danish High End brands, Bang & Olufsen, Louis Poulsen Lighting and Le Klint.
Øivind graduated from the Danish Design School and studied music at the Royal Danish Academy of Music
WHY DESIGN
As peoples’ lives get more complex, people are asked to choose between an increasing number of directions. We believe that at heart, people want to focus on their life without getting distracted by complicated products, services and unnecessary information. We are not afraid of the obvious or even the banal because these qualities are timeless, they will stay appealing. Therefore, we work hard
to keep things simple.
to get rid of any information that does not help to understand the product.
to find beautiful and obvious solutions to complex problems.
DESIGN PROCES
We think, not by thinking but by doing.
In stead of talking we create sketches, instead of beginning the process with heavy analyses we explore the problems by creating intuitive solutions. Our analysing process begins the moment, where we have got a number of alternative sollutions.
In this way, the process shifts from intuitive creativity to analyse to creativity to analyse to... until the goal is reached.
Danish Designer, Øivind Slaatto, and Be Original Americas Ambassador, John Edelman, Design Consultant, explore design processes and lighting philosophies.
Together with colleagues, Hee Welling and Steffen Juul, Øivind Slaatto founded the shared studio, B33. Together we invested in a prototype-workshop including 3D printers and machines needed to make fully functional prototypes. Good design requires good prototypes - and making physical mock-ups in an early stage of the design process enables us to fail and learn fast.
In our shared studio space we see other designers as inspiring colleagues rather than annoying competitors. Building a healthy and inspiring work-culture is our most important investment and the secret behind our success.
Beside sharing our passion for design we play a lot of table tennis.
